Have you ever seen me and Russell Crowe in the same room? I think you have not.
The reason I mention this is that our kitchen is being rebuilt, and all the kitchen stuff, along with with a sort of mini temporary kitchenette, has been installed in our lounge, which was already very full - mainly of books, but also old unwanted presents (do have some clove rock, a mahogany desk tidy and some anti-wrinkle creams), equipment for back exercises and lamps, some of which work. The reason I mention this is that it gives me a crude sense of what it must have been like on board a Master & Commander-style naval vessel, with all the things you need being in one very packed room, with lots of noise (assuming the kitchen-fitters, currently two hours late for day one, ever arrive) and people (ditto) having to rub along together.
Unlike Russell Crowe in Master & Commander, I shall be able to spend most of this week in the library and we have Sky.
Also unlike Russell Crowe in Master & Commander, I did a workshop at the Beverley Literary Festival last Friday. Beverley Minster is excellent. I was in the Duomo in Florence briefly a month ago, and it was rubbish comparatively, not counting the art. Go the Goths. (The exterior of the Duomo is very good, but inside - meh. With good pictures.)
